“Moonlight on Missouri” —(also known as “Hazel’s Song”)—– I’d been hearing about these two sisters who had started singing out in the clubs here. I made it to one of their shows, and Emily and Beth Tummons knocked me out. We talked after their set about possibly working together sometime. Beth had her brand-new baby Hazel with her.
That night, still under their spell, I went home and wrote this song. It’s the only lullabye I’ve ever written. The Tummons Sisters kindly recorded it for me; and then did this live version at the Howard show. When they’re not singing together, Emily spends much of her time working with Mayan Indians in rural Guatemala; and teaches an obscure Mayan language at the University of Kansas. Hazel isFø three now, and Beth spends most of her time raising Hazel and another kid she’s had since then. Beth sometimes sings Big Band jazz with a group out of St. Louis. That’s a buddy of mine, Jeff Larison, on pedal steel; and my long-time partner-in-crime, Rainmaker Pat Tomek, on drums. Johnny Nichols from the Grisly Hand played bass, and Josh Mobley from a couple of local bands played keyboards.
A couple of notes re the lyrics. Kansas City is mostly located in the State of Missouri. The dogwood is our state tree, and the bluebird is our state bird. But after we recorded the song, I found out that Beth and Hazel actually live just across the state line; so I shoulda been writing “Kissing in Kansas”. I’ll get to that one some other time, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be a lullabye.”
