Det er seks år siden Gillian Welch ga ut The Harrow and The Harvest. I kid you not. SEKS år. Før det var det stillhet på platefronten i åtte år. En ting som har undret mange er det totale fraværet av Gillian Welch på vinyl. Hvis det er én samling plater som hadde kledd vinylformatet så er det alt Gillian har laget. Music On Vinyl i Nederland klarte vel å presse noen eksemplarer av Soul Journey i 2015, men disse kom vel aldri i normalt salg – såvidt meg bekjent.
MEN – alt har jo sin naturlige forklaring. De to ønsker å gjøre det helt riktig. I et intervju med The Bluegrass Situation i 2015 sa Rawlings følgende, når han ble spurt om når platene kom på vinyl:
“I’m in the middle of that process. We’ve always been committed to not wanting to make vinyl off the digital parts. Our records are very spare, and because of that, the soundscapes are a lot of what make them what they are. So I’ve never been excited about remastering them. Going to another master and coming up with a different picture — to me that would make it a very different record. We’ve been going down a very long path of getting a very high-quality lathe into our mastering engineer’s facility, and we’re close to being done with that. Then we’ll start knocking them out. Again, 100 percent obsolete. Maybe somebody’s making a new lathe in the near future, but I don’t think a professional lathe has been made since the ‘80s. The thing that’s so stupid is that vinyl is so important to us that we’ve never done it.” (Dave Rawlings, The Bluegrass Situation)
Nå slipper de altså The Harrow and The Harvest på vinyl, som første plate i det vi håper er komplett vinylsamling fra Gillian Welch og Dave Rawlings.
Gillian meldte følgende i nyhetsbrevet som annonserte releasen:
“We have been working and waiting 20 years to bring you our music on phonograph record. It took a while, because we wanted to do it the right way, the absolute best way humanly possible, and I believe that’s what we’ve done. No sonic stone was left unturned, no nuance let fall by the wayside. There is honestly nothing else I can imagine hoping to hear out of the original tapes. It is all there in the groove. As people whose lives were changed by the sound of music coming off turntables, we humbly invite you to include us in your record collection.”
Gillian og Dave har mastret vinylen fra de originale teipene, via custom Ortofon forsterkere – til deres Neumann VMS-80 vinyl-cutter. Naturligvis presset på audiophile kvalitet vinyl.
