Joe Smith & The Going Concern - Rock & Roll EP
Rock anyone? Jatakk, I take three! Three songs from Joe Smith & The Going Concern is just right. This is just so wrong foot air that is deeply charming, but not so out there that it does not work.
They introduce themselves as follows:
«Older guy and younger guy improbably bond over what they believe music should be"
Joe Smith & The Going Concern is Joe Smith on vocals and guitar, and Ross Harrell on drums. And that's it. And there is more than enough. I never liked the White Stripes, but Joe Smith takes the concept, klæsjer a good dose of charm and get it to sound like a band. There is no flinkeri and posturing. Here are just good old fashioned honest rock'n'roll!
It is far from discs I will be sent the musicians so clearly it has endless fun. EP called "Rock & Roll EP" and the first song called "Rock & Roll". Here it is fat, tough guitar riffs and just enough good vocals. The drums are of course what makes it all gonna work. Without a drummer who can be rhythm section alone, so this will never gonna work. It helps of course that there are two guitar tracks on the tracks. Rhythm guitar harrows down the standard rhythms, while solo guitar riffs away at just the right places.
"I'm not alone,
I've got a home in rock'n'roll "
Other song 'Evan's Girlfriends' is a clever little thing where Joe Smith sings about Evan and his female friends.
"Just another one,
of Evan's girlfriends. "
It may sound simple, but there is depth and snappy lyrics that are delivered with humor and intensity.
If they sing about friends is uncertain, but in this case it is quite direct disclosure of private life. If not, then it is quite cleverly constructed and extremely straight texts.
Anyway, it works - and three songs are exactly right! They say even the EP "sounds like an out-of-control car careening down the road." And thus .. it's rock'n'roll, it's rock'n'roll!
EP listen and buy on Bandcamp . It costs $ 4. Visit them also on Facebook.
As a bonus, here is the song "Expired On A Shelf", which is NOT part of the EP (but that sounds very similar):
